About the series
The Making of the Past
The Making of the Past is a new series designed to provide a complete survey of the early history of the world as revealed by archaeology and related disciplines. Its subject is a neii' history, the making of a new past, freshly uncovered and reconstructed in recent years by skilled specialists. Beautifully illustrated with photographs, many in full colour, and with maps, diagrams and line drawings including reconstructions, the series will be completely authoritative and up-to-date, while losing nothing of the excitement of recent discoveries about the ancient past.

The Neil- World deals with the archaeology and the pre-Columbian cultures of North and South America and of Mesoamerica. Unusual in that it covers the whole of the Americas in one volume, the book forms an invaluable introduction to the surprisingly varied archaeology of the New World, hitherto little known outside the Americas.
The early chapters, shared by the three authors, are devoted to a survey of each area as well as an account of the pioneering explorers and archaeologists, from the Conquistadores to the excavators of our own time, who worked and travelled there. Among these are such men as Frederick Catherwood, the young American artist whose sensitive drawings of Maya ruins, executed in the early 19th century, are so greatly admired today, and Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, who was the first to bring scientific methods to the excavation of an Indian mound.
