HE New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary is the new standard reference work for modern English and its history. The entirely new text draws on the acclaimed Oxford English Dictionary, Second Edition> but alsó includes the results of fresh research into word meanings and history, pronunciations, and new words in English. Entries span the generál vocabulary of today's language together with extensive coverage of scientific and technical terms, slang, and colloquial English. Thousands of rare words are alsó included (e.g. ossature, avicide, molebut, and ugsomé). Even words now obsolete are included if they were still in use after 1700, or appear in Shakespeare. Importantly, the New Shorter alsó traces the history of each word: different senses are listed chronologically, with datings for the first use of each (e.g. baker OE, curfew ME, renegade L15, voucher Eió, granny M17, baggy li8, goody-goody Mi9, glam M20, videó L20). The Dictionary's half-million definitions cover thousands of new words, for instance ditsy, morph, winterim, basuco, email, PIN, ciabatta, Majorism, and waitron> as well as the latest scientific developments. Editor-in-Chief Lesley Brown brings nearly twenty years' experience of historical lexicography to the New Shorter. She and her Oxford Dictionaries team (numbering at its height sixteen fulltime lexicographers as well as many researchers and advisers), spent thirteen years compiling the dictionary.
