The National Museum in Warsaw shared the stormy fate of the Polish capital. Several times during three-hundred-odd years, circumstances arose which in favourable conditions would have resulted in the establishment in Warsaw of a museum of world-scale importance. Several times during three-hundred-odd years, circumstances arose which in favourable conditions would have resulted in the establishment in Warsaw of a museum of world-scale importance. But even when in 1862 the Museum of Fine Arts was founded, no proper development followed. The first favourable period in the history of the Museum was that between the two world wars. After the disastrous years 1939-1945, the National Museum was rapidly restored; it rebuilt its collections and developed them in many directions. Today, the National Museum in Warsaw is the central museum institution of the Polish state; it is alsó a scientific and conservation centre and an educational institution in the broad meaning of the term. The National Museum in Warsaw now houses: the Gallery of Ancient Art, Gallery of Medieval Art, Gallery of Foreign Painting, Gallery of Polish Painting. Besides, because of lack of exhibition space, the Museum stores contain collections of decorative art, Polish and European engravings and drawings, and coins and medals. These exhibits are desplayed to the public at temporary exhibitions. (from the introduction by Stanislaw Lorentz) Vissza
