Foreword
Magnificently lodged in four mansion-houses dating from the Renaissance, the Agen Musée des Beaux-Arts captivates visitors by the wealth of its collections and the beauty of its setting.
Since the late nineteenth century, the museum has continued to attract the attention of large numbers of collectors, who have made generous benefactions to the City of Agen. As a result, we have the good fortune to own one of the most important museums in the south-west of France. The residents of Agen are well aware of this, and proud of it too. Keen to show the collection to best advantage, Dr Esquirol, Mayor of Agen from 1971 to 1981, took the decision to have the museum reorganized and extended. The newly presented collection was inaugurated in 1976 and brought the museum to national attention. However, we were still lacking an attractive handbook to help art-lovers and those with an interest in this sphere to discover more about the collections, and appreciate their importance.... Tovább

However, we were still lacking an attractive handbook to help art-lovers and those with an interest in this sphere to discover more about the collections, and appreciate their importance. Now, thanks to the generosity of the Fondation BNP Paribas, the Agen museum is once again enjoying national recognition through inclusion in the 'Musées et Monuments de France' series. We extend our warmest thanks to it for this. On the eve of a further stage of expansion, during which the museum will be enriched by both new and as yet 'hidden' works, we hope that this book will help many a visitor to discover the wealth of historical and artistic treasures housed in the Agen Musée des Beaux-Arts.
