The Moving Image is the first book to tell the entire story of moving images in all their forms, from the prehistory and invention of the tinemo to television, video and beyond.
From the magic lantern to satellite video, the moving image has had a dramatic influence upon modern civilization. The first public demonstration of the cinema was in 1895, and within twenty yeors the feature film had become the world's favourite form of entertainment.
Talking pictures began in 1927 and Technicolor was introduced less than ten years later. By 1946 cinema had reached the peak of its popularity, but its triumph was short-lived. By the 1950s a rival form of moving image - television, first demonstrated in 1926 - was already threatening to displace the cinema as the world's most popular leisure octivity.
As we approach the twenty-first century, the rapidly increasing popularity of the video recorder and exciting new forms of broadcasting, by cable and satellite, are bringing about yet another revolution in cultural life. Television as we know it is now following the picture palace into history.
Published to mark the opening of the new Museum of the Moving Image, The Moving image acts as a companion guide to the Museum, but also provides a comprehensive account of the moving image, from Daguerre to Dallas.
With a foreword by HRH the Prince of Wales, and lavishly illustrated with almost 300 photographs, many in colour, The Moving Image will be required reading for anyone with an interest in film and television - whether professional or amateur, whether film buff or soap addict.
