ENGLISH LANGUAGE SERIES General Editor: Randolph Quirk
As English has increasingly come into world-wide use, there
has arisen an acute need for more information on the
language and the ways in which it is used.
The English Language Series seeks to meet this need and to
play a part in further stimulating the study and teaching of
English by providing up-to-date and scholarly treatments of
topics most relevant to present-day English—including its
history and traditions, its sound patterns, its grammar,
its lexicology, its rich and functionally orientated variety
in speech and writing, and its standards in Britain,
the
u.s.a. and the other principal areas where the language is used. °

Professor Gordon's book is a much needed survey ofthe history of English prose, itself written in a prose which is eminently attractive and economical. The complex strands of development are woven skilfully so as to show with great clarity the constant features from Anglo-Saxon times to the present day, and particular emphasis is laid on the essential continuity of English, prose. The subject is seen as part ofthe history of ideas, and the author shows the fascinating links between prose development and social history. Professor Gordon insists that important prose is not written only by the obviously 'important' writers, and the reader will enjoy the learnedly rich illustration from the work of each period that the author considers most relevant to his theme. For the experienced reader, the book gathers a wealth of diverse information and opinion into a convenient summary from a unified viewpoint. For the less experienced, it is an informative introduction, with the additional help— in a concluding section—of exercises related to prose of the more famihar kinds written within the modern period.
