THE MOTHER BERTOLT BRECHT WITH NOTES BY THE AUTHOR TRANSLATED AND WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY LEE BAXANDALL The Mother was the third of Bertolt Brecht's plays to be included by the playwright himself in the repertory of the Berlin Ensemble. It has returned to the repertory since, and a film was made of the production, suggesting the high regard Brecht had for the play. Earlier Brecht had shown his feeling by making his first American visit to oversee a New York production in 1935. This is the play's first publication in the English language. The play is freely adapted from Gorki's worldfamous növel of the same name. Brecht telis the story of a working-class mother who is drawn gradually, through a series of experiences, into the struggle for a Bolshevik revolution. The play ends in 1917 on the eve of the Tsar's overthrow. In the character of Pelagea Vlassova, the mother of the title, Brecht has drawn a richly humán figure who emerges as the single entirely positive major hero or heroine... Tovább

Brecht telis the story of a working-class mother who is drawn gradually, through a series of experiences, into the struggle for a Bolshevik revolution. The play ends in 1917 on the eve of the Tsar's overthrow. In the character of Pelagea Vlassova, the mother of the title, Brecht has drawn a richly humán figure who emerges as the single entirely positive major hero or heroine in all of the playwright's dramatic works. As such The Mother must be known if Brecht's other characters are to be grasped in full perspective. These other Brecht titles are alsó available in Evergreen editions: Mother Courage (E-372); Baal, A Man's A Man and The Elephant Calf (BC-60); Parables for the Theatre (E-53); The Threepenny Opera (BC-73); The Jewish Wife and Other Short Plays (BC-80); The Visions of Simoné Machard (BC-88); Selected Poems (E-187), and The Threepenny Növel (E-42). Eric Bentley is General Editor of the Grove Press Edition of the Works of Bertolt Brecht. Vissza
