The Most Beautiful Villages of Greece and the Greek Islands
Mark Ottaway Thotographs by Hugh Palmer
From the green, terracotta and ochre of the
Ionian Islands in the west, to the brilliant blue and white of the Aegean, the villages of Greece and its islands present a picture of incomparable beauty. The variety of village life and building, both on the mainland and on the islands, springs from a multitude of histories and influences, often accompanied by foreign occupation. Yet this variety, celebrated here, cannot disguise the fact that these villages are all, in their separate ways, an expression of Greekness, one of the most durable ideals in history. Here, then, are the most beautifiil villages created by that indomitable spirit, captured in vivid detail - a simple table and chairs beside a white wall, a terracotta pot of radiant blooms, a glass of wine - all shown against the vivid landscape of Greece.

The book follows a journey which takes in the mountains of the mainland, where villages characterized by flowers and running water, stone-walled ground floors and overhanging wood-framed balconies betray a Turkish influence. It begins, though, in the southern Peloponnese, where the tower houses of Maniot villages were built by families warring with their neighbours. The villages of the Ionian Islands boast high-belfried churches, porticoes and colonnades, a testament to the period of rule by Venice. The other islands have their own delights: ancient temples and sandy bays, cobbled paths and shaded courtyards. The very essence of Greece is conjured up in the flat-roofed white houses of the Cyclades, startling against blue sky and Aegean Sea.
Complete with appendices of useful information for the traveller, The Most Beautiful Villages of Greece and the Greek Islands presents a fabulous picture of a village culture largely lost to other countries of Europe.
