The city of Minsk contained the only Jewish ghetto created by the Nazis in the Soviet Union. Elsewhere, nearly two millión Soviet Jews were murdered outright. Initially exploited by the Nazis, Minsk's Jews were ultimately condemned. They were terrorized by the Germans and finally murdered in the surrounding forests. But they did not go quietly. Though they kept themselves separate from their fellow-Jews, they all died together. In recognition of his heroism, Hersh Smolar was asked to lead a contingent from his region in the victory parade in Moscow at the war's conclusion. There, the author witnessed the first vestiges of post-war antiSemitism. THE MINSK GHETTO is a major contribution to the body of Holocaust literature. Vissza
