THE MIDDLE EAST A History This is the second, revised edition of Professor Fishers history of the Middle East in Muslim times. Although it includes a general survey of the area before the birth of Muhammad and discusses at length the development of Islam, its principal emphasis is on the modern period. At the end of each chapter there is a selected bibliography containing especially pertinent items for further reading, arranged for easy cross reference. There are fifteen maps. The Middle East combines authority with an organized, readable simplicity, offering to both the student and the general reader... Tovább

The Middle East combines authority with an organized, readable simplicity, offering to both the student and the general reader an understanding of a complex and important subject. In this revision, the material has been updated since 1958 to include some of the details of the crisis of the summer of 1967, and to change and correct other statements as required by recent studies and publications. Commenting on the first edition, The Times Literary Supplement wrote 'Mr Fisher has succeeded both in writing a readable account and in preserving an adequately objective attitude in expounding a region in which passions run high and particular causes are often cherished by the outside observer.
