In the mid-i86os the time was ripe for a political settlement between Austria and Hungary. Elisabeth visited Hungary several times during the negotiations. On June 8"', 1867, Francis Joseph was crowned king, Elisabeth queen of Hungary, in the Virgin Mary Church in Buda. Hungarians loved their queen very much; they saw her as the all-time defender of Hungarian interests, the guardian angel and the beneficent, protective spirit of their country.
Elisabeth felt ill at ease in the strictly regulated atmosphere of the imperial court. She took refuge in illness, and later turned to incessant travelling. Endless roaming without a definite destination almost became her lifestyle. On September io'h, 1898, she was assassinated by an Italian anarchist near Lake Geneva. She was laid to eternal rest in the crypt of the Viennese Capuchins, the ancestral burial place of the Habsburgs. Vissza
