The Mayor of Casterbridge is set in the beautiful
Wessex countryside which is the background to so
much of Hardy's work.
It is the story of Michael Henchard, a proud man,
who tries to fight against his fate, but whose life is
ruled by one terrible action in the past.
When he first comes to Casterbridge, he has
nothing. Driven on by the horror of selling his wife
and daughter, he is determined to live a new and
honest life. After years of hard work, he becomes a
a successful farmer, and then the Mayor of
Casterbridge. But like so many of Hardy's
characters, Henchard is trapped by his own

more his downfall.
