The friction match was described by the philosopher, Herbert Spencer, as fthe greatest boon to mankind in the 19th century'. For thousands of years man had sought a means to kindle instant fiamé, and the invention of the match in 1827 marked not only an important stage in humán development but the foundation of a new industry. Two Quakers, William Bryant and Francis May, were among the first to apply modern mass-production methods to match making, and thus were instrumental in the abolition of a sweated Victorian cottage industry which still remains a black spot on British industrial history. The íirm originated in London in 1843 as a wholesale provision merchants and purchased its first small consignment of matches in 1850. It began manufacturing its own matches in 1861 and its history since then is one of continual progress. Today the company operates on a worldwide scale and, at home and abroad, produces no fewer than 340 biliion matches a year. The Match Makers is more than the story of a nationally famous company. In relating its history the author traces the age-old search for an easy means of fire making, and how that search has, through continual technical and marketing developments, arrived at a stage where it takes only an estimated seven seconds of humán labour to produce a box of matches.
