Bret Harte THE LUCK OF ROARING CAMP and Other Short Stories In 1870, the young Bret Harte (1836-1902), then working as an editor and writer in San Francisco, first gathered into one volume a collection of his rousing stories of life in the Far West. Entitled The Luck of Roaring Camp, and Other Sketches, the book propelled him almost overnight from local celebrity to American literary lion. Four of the most famous of these tales are included in this collection: the title story, "The Outcasts of Póker Fiat," "Tennessee's Partner" and "M'liss." "A Protégée of Jack Hamlin" and "An Ingénue of the Sierras," written later in Harte's life, boast full casts of lively and colorful characters and settings ranging from a stagecoach to a Sacramento River steamer.
