A troubled marriage, a troubled country, and a husband's strange search for his wife's lover are the ingredients of this növel which unfolds against the background of Israel's October War.
The story is told, in differing perspectives, by the principal characters - husband, wife, a young Arab, a teenage daughter - and we are drawn into their innermost thoughts as A. B. Yehoshua shows us how the love affair affects all their lives. When the war comes Gábriel, the lover, disappears and with the search for him comes the realization of family ties. The uneasy present, the tension between generations, between Israel's past and her future, are brilliantly and compassionately observed in this complex and highly originál növel by one of Israel's most exciting writers.
