In particular The Long Christmas Dínner, which successfully compresses ninety years of family life into one act, comes across as an extraordinary and at times moving theatrical tour-de-force. Wilder deliberately shattered the illusion of reality which had been fostered by the boxed conventions of earlier drama, notably with his device of 'The Stage Manager' (chorus, commentator, and bit-part actor in one), who first appears in Pullman Car Hiawatha and The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden. And these early plays, which include Queens of Francé and Love, and How To Cure It, all demonstrate his ability to reveal the inner truth of life by fusing the leaden facts of reality with the poeticái...
