For nearly half a century they remained silent. Their experience of bereavement, the torments to which they were subjected in the forced-labor camps and extermination centers — they buried it all in their hearts. Gradually, one by one, they came home to Eretz Yisrael. Here they underwent agricultural training, organized themselves into a group and founded a vibrant, flourishing farming community.
About forty years later Professor Moshe Davis succeeded in getting them to open their hearts and record their testimony for their children and future generations. It was a very gradual process. Their testimony covers a broad range. This, despite the fact that this book contains only the tiniest sampling of each testimony.

The book The Living Testify is built as follows: First there is a detailed outline of the oral testimony. Then the names of all the members of each survivor's family are given -children and grandchildren. Finally there is the segment of testimony. The volume also contains the story of Nir Galim and an analysis of the testimonies - that is the reply of the Jewish People as a whole to those seeking to destroy it.
The survivors never lost their faith and hope. They reconstructed themselves by engaging in construction and production on the soil of the Jewish People's ancient homeland.
The message of the witnesses living at Nir Galim is the capacity not to lose faith in God despite all the tribulations and doubts, the capacity not to lose one's will to live and one's faith in the basic decency of people, and - above all - to settle in Eretz Yisrael and build it up.
The Jewish people lives and will always live -that is the message of the witnesses living at Nir Galim. And it is the message and mission of this book.
"In the field of Holocaust literature, nothing is as important nor as meaningful as the personal accounts of those who survived its nightmare only to tell the tale. The voices in this important volume must be heard. Listen to them and you will learn of Hungarian Jewry's solitude and despair in those times of fear and trembling."
Elie Wiesel
Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities Boston University
" To give witness fully and truthfully is an ethical obligation of paramount importance, especially as is the case for survivors of the Holocaust who have seen evil face to face and who need to speak so that others may hear and leam. Never to forget is the clarion call of these living witnesses."
Professor A. Gottschaik. Chair Academic Committee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Committee
They set out from Refidim and encamped in the wilderness of Sinai. "The Bible recounts the journey from and arrival at. leaving unsaid what happened in between. Not so in The Living Testify. The stories are simple, so too the charm and the power. They journeyed from Europe and arrived in the Land of Israel We !earn of the determination that endured even living hell, the determination to be free at home, at one with the Jewish People and their God."
Michael Bercnbaum
Hymen Goldman Professor of Theology, Georgetown University author of TCic World Must Know: The Histon' of the Holocaust as Told in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Vissza
