The Living Arts of Nigeria
edited by IVilliam Fagg photographs by Peccinotti illustrated by Michael Foreman
Nigeria's art heritage is a rich one: its roots are firmly embedded in its history and way of life; its techniques have been handed down from master to apprentice, father to son, for hundreds of years. As a culture, it is very much alive. Yet hitherto, although a resurgence ofinterest in African arts of the past has led to many books, little attention has been paid to today's 'living arts'. This book serves to report on some of the major crafts practised in Nigeria today, and to show the variety of wares, from the beaded crowns of the kings of the Yoruba to the simple, functional waterjars.
William Fagg, former Keeper of Ethnography at the British Museum, and an authority on African arts, introduces the book, setting Nigeria's arts and crafts within the context of Africa and her history. The book is divided into seven sections, dealing in turn with beadwork, brass work,... Tovább

The book is divided into seven sections, dealing in turn with beadwork, brass work, dyeing, leather, pottery, weaving, and carving. Each section consists of several pages of full colour photographs, prefaced by a short but detailed description of the craft by William Fagg, and expanded by Michael Foreman's clearly annotated illustrations of the Nigerian artist-craftsman at work.
The Living Arts of Nigeria provides an eloquent record of the tremendous vitality of the native crafts still practised in Nigeria today. Vissza
