THE LIFE AND IDEAS OF

*
As early as 1843 the eminent critic Sainte-Beuve said:
"I may dare affirm . . . that Byron and cle Sade . . . have

strangest lives ever lived, and a careful analysis of ideas
whose influence has been great and continues to grow.
Geoffrey Gorer was educated at Charterhouse and Jesus
College, Cambridge, and later studied at the Sorbonne and
the University of Berlin, In addition to the present volume,
two other books by Mr. Gorer are published in the Norton
Library: Africa Dances (N173) and The People of Great
