Renaissance forms lingered on in Venice, but elsewhere the nervous and refined sensibility summed up in the word Mannerism predominated in a world torn by the Reformation. Linda Murray describes the important part which Michelangelo, by now the dominant figure in Italian art, played in the transition from the simplicity of early High Renaissance art to the more sophisticated style of the later sixteenth century. His Last Judgement, the last Piéta groups, and the designs for St Peter's all fali in this period. The account of the growth of Mannerism includes Giulip Romano, Pontormo, Bronzino, Parmigianino, and the sculpture of Benvenuto Cellini; the architects Peruzzi and Vignola in Romé, and Palladio, Sansoyino and Sanmichele in \renice; and Veronesé v and Tintoretto, Titian's successors in Venice.
