Most large-scale historical
works on the medieval Balkans have been individual "national histories," often betraying a parochial bias. In this critical survey, the author analyzes the complex relationships among the political entities of the area included in the present-day countries of Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Albania, and Greece.
The book opens with the emergence of new states in Bulgaria, Serbia, and Bosnia, as well as the establishment of Latin polities following the Fourth Crusade. It then traces the internal histories and mutual relationships of these various political units until their subjugation by the Ottomans.
This is the first book in any language that deals with the late medieval Balkans as a whole. The author's analysis of written and archaeological sources is both thorough and convincing.
