In 1908 a three-year old boy was enthroned as Emperor of China in the fabled Forbidden City in Peking. Pu Yi
was China's Last Emperor; four years later he was deposed when China became a republic. Yet he spent his boyhood and adolescence in the make-beHeve world of
the Forbidden City, treated as a living god and surrounded by an opulent medieval court of eunuchs, courtiers and corrupt officials. Expelled eventually from the Forbidden City he squandered his massive fortune in, attempts to regain his throne, until he was installed by the Japanese as the puppet Emperor of their brutal regime in Manchuria. Captured by the Russians in 1945, a star witness at the Tokyo "International War Crimes Trial" he survived a five-year spell in Soviet hands before they
handed him over to Communist China for "reeducation": nine years in a special prison followed until his "reform" was complete. Pardoned by Mao, he lived out his life as a gardener and humble citizen of the People's Republic.

Pu Yi's life is both extraordinary and tragic, encompassing a medieval age and the nuclear world. It is
now the subject of a lavish movie from Bernardo Bertolucci, filmed on location in the Forbidden City, and
of a major biography by renowned international correspondent Edward Behr, who has based his research on interviews with those who knew Pu Yi: the Last
Emperor. Vissza
