How does the Labour Party Conference work? How is power distributed among those who take part? How is policy made at and through the Conference? How does the Conference interact with other bodies within the Party? These are some of the questions answered in this definitive study.
Each segment of the Conference is scrutinised in detail and its secret areas explored, including the dextrous management of the agenda, the conflicts within union delegations (particularly the remarkable Engineers' delegation) and the elections for the National Executive Committee.
The author challenges the orthodox view that power in the Labour Party is inevitably and invariably concentrated into the hands of the Parliamentary leadership. He also offers a new interpretation of the Party's ideological changes in recent years. He illustrates how the subtle controls which operated at the Conference obscured the extent of support for traditional democratic socialism during the years of what was then thought to be the 'victory' of social-democratic revisionism within the Party.
