POLITICAL SCIENCE/MEDIEVAL STUDIES "Professor Kantorowicz has written a great book, perhaps the most important work in the history of medieval political thought, surely the most spectacular, of the past several generations. Here, in superbly designed chapters based upon the best scholarship in every field even remotely concerned with the Middle Ages, is the development of the theory and symbolism of the early national states from the eleventh to the sixteenth centuries." -P. N. Riesenberg, American Political Science Review "Professor Ernst Kantorowicz has in this volume given us a monumental work of superb scholarship and profound learning, magnificently produced by Princeton University Press. Few, if any, contributions to the study of medieval thought comparable to this depth and width have been made for many years." -B. Few, if any, contributions to the study of medieval thought comparable to this depth and width have been made for many years." -B. Chrimes, The Law Quarterly Review "In considering the various words and images that came to stand for permanent institutions, Kantorowicz discusses the phrases 'head and crown' and 'realm and crown,' which appeared in various medieval documents. What, he asks, can 'crown' mean in these phrases? His solution is that the king's head and the geographical realm are purely physical phenomena, and that the word 'Crown,' when added, indicated the political metaphysis in which both rex and regnum shared, or the body politic (to which both belonged) in its sovereign rights. The separating of the crown from its physical reality and turning it into a term of political theology is a typical episode in the story Kantorowicz telis. . . . As it reached its final form, Kantorowicz argues, the very act of sharply discriminating institutions as legal fictions and metaphors intensified the awareness of the mortality of the mere men who devised and at any given moment represented the institutions."-Paul Alpers, University Publishing Ernst Kantorowicz taught at the University of California, Berkeley and was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey. He wrote Frederick the Second (Ungar) and Selected Studies (J. J. Augustin) PRINCETON PAPERBACKS Cover Illustration: Emperor Henry II as Judge (Monté Cassino Gospels, A.D. 1022-1023) Vissza
