The Jeffersonian and Hamiltonian Traditions in American Politics
A documentary history edited by
Albert Fried «
When Hamilton and Jefferson were appointed to Washington's cabinet in 1789, they differed profoundly over the purposes and ideals that were to guide the fiew nation. In Hamilton's view, the federal government's chief function was to support the creditor and commercial interests, while Jefferson believed its primary aim was to enhance the economic and political rights of the majority. Tracing the history of American political thought from their time to our own, this book demonstrates how these two dominant traditions have persisted and have re-emergecl in every generation. Both were equally nationalistic; each, however, defined nationalism in accordance with his own social values. Tracing the history of American political thought from their time to our own, this book demonstrates how these two dominant traditions have persisted and have re-emergecl in every generation. Although the country has been transformed, and although problems have arisen that were undreamed of in the past, the conffict between Hamiltonianism and Jeffer-sonianism has continued. As America has changed from an agricultural to an industrial and technological society, so the means by which each side has pursued its ends have changed.
Combining a revealing selection of letters, speeches. Supreme Court decisions, and other documents with long chapter introductions that could stand alone as a history of American political thought, the volume offers fresh perspectives on many of the issues and movements of the American past. Vissza
