The Italian Renaissance Most people think of the Renaissance as Italian in region with the great masterpieces achieved by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael in Florence, Milán and Rome. The watchword of the Renaissance, however, was "change". In The Italian Renaissance: The First Steps to Freedom the author takes the reader on a golden journey tracing the styles of major and minor artists, as they moved from place to place, absorbing a rich cross fertilization of ideas that passed between the schools of Tuscany, Siena, Umbria and Mantua. We see the transition from the tradition of grand realism in Giotto and Masaccio's cool geometrical frescos, to the dizzying visual brilliance of Mantegna and Uccello's foreshortened perspectives to the emotional expression of Vasari and Parmigianino.
