The Fontana Économie History of Europe is the first
comprehensive survey of the subject to make its
original appearance in paperback. Volumes 1 to
4 take the story up to the beginning of the
twentieth century while volumes 5 and 6 cover
the last fifty years.
The plan of the work, besides giving full weight
to such traditional aspects of the subject as
population, agriculture, trade, technology and
finance allows for the treatment of topics too
often neglected. Thus in each period the levels
and pattern of demand are given a chapter to
themselves.
In this volume emphasis is given to the effect of
the Industrial Revolution on banking, economic
policy and theory, agriculture, and the class
structure. It is complemented by volume 4,
The Emergence of Industrial Societies which covers
the same period but from the point of view of
individual countries.
