The Illustrated Encyclopedia of FIREARMS

Ian V. Hogg

The application of the percussion principle to firearms about 1830 was one of the most revolutionary advances in the history of the gun. Coupled with the increasing demand in the nineteenth century for weaponry which could be quickly and cheaply produced, it was a crucial factor in the development of mass production methods in the manufacture of hand and shoulder arms. This lavishly illustrated encyclopedia is both a history of the firearm from its beginnings to the present day, and an A-Z directory of nineteenth- and twentieth-century military and sporting weaponry. The alphabetical entries, which number approximately 750, give the salient details of thousands of weapons. There are also details of the careers of the designers, inventors and gunsmiths who have had a significant influence on the development of small arms during the period. This section of the encyclopedia is made an even more useful tool of reference and research by the many illustrations of firearms, makers and makers' marks.
The introductory history of firearms, illustrated in full colour, tells the story of all the major developments and advances in guns and ammunition from early hand cannon to the latest automatic rifle. A separate technical glossary gives an entry-by-entry treatment of special weapons and mechanisms.
