The idea of the Renaissance - of the revival of ancient glories - was originally the arrogant boast of a few Italian scholars. The term has come to represent a remarkable range of cultural achievements in Europe from the 14th to the 16th centuries - arguably the highpoint of Western civilization.
The Hutchinson Encyclopedia of die Renaissance
provides an indispensable guide to this exciting period. It gives the essential information about the leading Renaissance artists and scholars and their works. But though the Renaissance is synonymous with learning and the arts, these did not occur in isolation. This book also shows how social trends and individual political figures influenced the period's culture.
The culture ofthe Renaissance was international and this is reflected in the encyclopedia's broad geographical coverage. Many Italian scholars and artists worked for foreign patrons; artists in countries across Europe imitated and transformed Italian styles. This process of interchange and continual criticism is traced through over 1,500 fully cross-referenced A-Z entries, and more detailed feature articles that explore the developments and concepts that were central to the Renaissance and which have come to exemplify it.
The text is supplemented by illustrations throughout, and a colour Picture Gallery guides the reader through some of the most important paintings, sculpture, and architecture of the period. Maps, genealogies, bibliographies, lists, and chronologies add further depth to die text
The Hutchinson Encyclopedia of the Renaissance is
both scholarly and readable, making it tiie indispensable reference work for students and general readers alike.
