This book is the final word from Jacl< O'Connor, America's best known firearms and shooting authority, respected and often revered by gun enthusiasts the world over. First published In 1957, THE HUNTER'S SHOOTING GUIDE was revised and updated by the author, the last work to be completed by him before his passing in December, 1977.
The hunter's use of rifles, shotguns, and handguns are the major subjects covered in this book. Here are O'Connor's typically honest and forthright evaluations of rifle actions and cartridges, and rifles, cartridges and scopes for deer. In the chapters on varmint cartridges and scopes, the author traces his own development from neophyte to expert long-range shooter of these small targets. His chapter on the controversial .270 is a classic defense of his favorite, fast-stepping cartridge. He discusses the modern cartridges and loads in detail, as well as the old reliables such as the .30/30, .35 Remington and .44/40, and devotes a special... Tovább

He discusses the modern cartridges and loads in detail, as well as the old reliables such as the .30/30, .35 Remington and .44/40, and devotes a special chapter to the venerable .30/06. The chapters on flinching, placement of shots, and long-range shooting are laced with his personal tips based on his many years of hunting.
As with rifles, O'Connor is eloquent in his discussion of shotguns, evaluating the doubles, pumps, and automatics, sorting out the shotgun gauges, stressing proper fit of the stock. Choke boring and shot are covered, and every style of scattergun shooting is described and many are illustrated.
Evaluation of handguns, shooting techniques, and cartridges are covered in the last chapters, followed by an index of terms and model listings.
THE AUTHOR
Jack O'Connor was born in Nogales, Arizona, in 1902. He began hunting with a BB gun when he was six. He had his first shotgun at eight, and shot his first deer when he was twelve. He has hunted extensively in Mexico, the Canadian Rockies, the Rocky Mountain states, Alaska, and the Yukon. He has shot mountain sheep and ibex in Iran on three hunts in that country. He has been on two tiger hunts in India and was successful both times. He was the fourth man to collect the Grand Slam of North American sheep, and on hunts in eight countries he has shot the Big Five of Africa. He has been elected to the Hunting Hall of Fame and has received the Weath-erby Award.
He was Shooting Editor of Outdoor Life from 1941 to 1972. He subsequently became Executive Editor of Huntirig magazine, and contributed major articles on rifles, big-game animals, or hunting each month.
To quote from Jim Carmichel's preface in this book, "With the possible exception of Theodore Roosevelt, no man of this century has had a greater impact on hunting and sport shooting than Jack O'Connor. His hunting adventures, his observations of the hunting scene, and his ability to describe them in a style uniquely his own made him the most listened-to sportsman-writer in America for nearly two generations."
