The Hungárián National Gallery is a public collection designed to represent the emergence and the development of (he fine arts in Hungary. The way to its foundation was paved by early 19th-century endeavours to reaiize a bourgeois transfonnation in Hungary, The first step in this direction was the foundation of two institutes, tbc Hungárián National Museum and the National Picture Gallery. In the first halt" of the 20th century the Museum of Fine Arts and the Budapest Gallery alsó had in their possession valuable collections by Hungárián masters. These collections were then merged to form the first national museum of the Hungárián fine arts. the Hungárián National Gallery, founded in 1957. Our volume offers j a saniple from the approximately 80,000 art ' objects held in the various departments ot the Hungárián National gallery (Old Hungárián Collection, Modern Hungárián Picture Gallery, Modern Hungárián Sculpture Collection, Coins and Medals Collection, Graphics Collection, Contemporary Collection). The list of artists whose masterpieces are held in the collection includes names such as the Master M.S., whose works heralded the arrival of the Renaissance in Hungary, and Károly Markó, who was the most prominent Hungárián exponent ot Classicist landscape painting; Viktor Madarász and Bertalan Székely, outstanding masters of Romantic painting; Mihály Munkácsy, the founder of the Reálist style in Hungary, and Pál Szinyei Merse, the great Hungárián Impressionist; Ferenczy, the most prominent member of the Nagybánya School which revived Hungárián painting; and Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, a painter of an extraordinary and unique style. Alsó, much attention is paid in the hook to works by contemporary Hungárián artists whose art is, unfortunately, not widely known.
