The History of The United Slates Flag
From the Revolution to the Present, Including a Guide to Its Use and Display
This book presents, in attractive pictures and reliable text, the known facts about the origin and development of our national flag. It tells a remarkable and, in some respects, an almost incredible story. For those who prefer historical truth it will be a far more satisfying story than the fictions and wishful thinking that have given rise to so many "flag myths." It appears that the flag, like the nation itself, evolved slowly and painfully from small beginnings; that it was shaped by many hands and brains; and that only very recently has it been stabilized in an official design. Even now the flag is subject to change — the admission of two young states in the last few years has made it new again.

The History of The United Slates Flag

This book presents, in attractive pictures and reliable text, the known facts about the origin and development of our national flag. It tells a remarkable and, in some respects, an almost incredible story. For those who prefer historical truth it will be a far more satisfying story than the fictions and wishful thinking that have given rise to so many "flag myths." It appears that the flag, like the nation itself, evolved slowly and painfully from small beginnings; that it was shaped by many hands and brains; and that only very recently has it been stabilized in an official design. Even now the flag is subject to change — the admission of two young states in the last few years has made it new again.
The authors of this book are to be congratulated for disentangling fact from fancy, for their careful analysis of the many false stories that have grown up around the flag, and for bringing to light much new and interesting history. From the day when John Paul Jones defiantly hoisted "the American stars" just off the coast of England to the moment when it was raised under fire by Marines on Iwo Jima, the flag has inspired countless deeds of glory. Its true life story, as set forth here, deserves to be well known.
