THE H1ST0RY OF THE MIDDLE EAST WRS Conflict in the Middle East has been a persistent threat to the peace and security of the world since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. In the years since then Israel and the nearby nations have fought five major wars and endless minor skirmishes with the ever present threat of escalation and superpower involvement. Such a prospect became menacing with the oil crisis that followed the 1973 Yom Kippur War and finally came to pass with the US -led campaign in the Gulf War. As well as such formidable threats, the Middle East Wars have made themselves felt in the activities of terrorist groups throughout the world - in the killing of athletes during the Munich Olympics, in the bombing of the Pan Am airliner over Lockerbie, and many other incidents. The Middle East Wars have been remarkable alsó for the evidence they have given of the progress of military technology and the test ground they have provided for the weapons of the superpowers. In 1973, for example, the early success of the Egyptian surface-to-air and anti-tank missiles led many commentators to talk of revolutionary changes in the conduct of war. Similarly in 1991, films shown on television showed the amazing accuracy achieved by modern precision-guided weapons in the Gulf. The actions in this and all the other conflicts are excitingly described byj. N. Westwood, who discusses the development of the various armed forces involved and assesses the effectiveness of their organization and weaponry. Although Egypt and Israel seem to have established a peaceful relationship, the ongoing problems of the Kurds in Iraq, and the persistent Palestine question can only emphasize the interest and topicality of this important book.
