THE
HISTORICAI, ATLAS OF
NATIVE AMERICANS
The story of the Native Americans is one that is intensely tragic. Forced from their ancestral lands by European settlers, many tribes suffered enormous losses, and some were totally obliterated in the upheaval as modern America began to take shape. This fascinating book explores the history of the native peoples of North America, from the early arrival of humans from Asia and their migration throughout the continent, the first and subsequently devastating contacts with European explorers and settlers, to the present day plight of the surviving tribes and their attempts to adapt to modern society. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of women in tribal society, the traditional familial and societal structures of Native Americans, and their diverse cultural values and practices.
The book begins by discussing the early migration of peoples via the Bering Land Bridge who first populated the Americas. The way in which Native Americans lived before European settlers arrived is then explored, with detailed chapters on the remarkable civilizations of the Incas, Maya and Aztecs, as well as the lesser-known Mississippian society, the Hohokam, and the Anasazi. The creation stories of different peoples, their art and culture, plus kinship and the way their societies were constructed are discussed, while maps show the complex trade routes which criss-crossed the continent and the different languages they spoke.
The book then goes on to examine those crucial first contacts with European settlers. As well as Christopher Columbus' significant landing on the islands of the Caribbean, the earlier settlement of the Vikings on the Northern peninsula is examined, plus the commercial fisheries of the Basques and the French. The aggressive tactics of the Spanish to gain land for their colonies, and the first settlements of the British and French are also described.
The fate of the Indians as pawns in the struggle for lands and power during the Imperial Wars is explored, as well as their role during the war of Independence and their uneasy alliances with the British, and the complete disregard for Native Americans shown by the H-eaty of Paris.
