The world-famous Hermitage is located on the Neva Embankment in the centre of Leningrad, forming part of one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles in the city. The complex of the Hermitage buildings took shape during the second half of the eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth centuries. Its focal point is the Winter Palace adjoined by the Small Hermitage, the Old Hermitage, the New Hermitage and the Hermitage Theatre, erected at a later date. The clear-cut layout of the ensemble and its halls and rooms matches beautifully the remarkable variety and luxurious splendour of the exterior and interior decor. The interiors were created by La Mothe. Velten and Quarenghi, who made wide use of moulding, gilt carving and precious species of wood. The Malachite Room, the Pavilion Hall, the Raphael Loggias and the magnificent Jordan Stairway are a pleasure to behold.
The Hermitage complex is an outstanding architectural landmark of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Vissza
