Edward Crankshaw
For nearly 650 years the Habsburgs played a key part
in the making of Europe; at times they came close to
c dominating it. And for over 500 of those years, with
minor interruptions, they contrived to back their
territorial power with the quasimystical authority of
the Imperial crown. In the sixteenth century this
extraordinary family, with its unyielding tenacity of
purpose, its genius for acquisition, its conviction of
divine mission, was master of a great part of Central
Europe, Burgundy, the Netherlands, all Spain, most of
Italy and parts of Africa.
The dynasty was all but swept away by the revolution
of 1848. But it survived and did not fall until the last
great Emperor in extreme old age allowed himself to
be goaded by the clamour of nationalism into the
violent action which precipitated the 1914 war.
Edward Crankshaw has brought alive the story of the
rise and fall of the Habsburgs with character studies
