A PANORAMA of tinted stone and cloudless sky . stretches to far horizons. Thousands of feet below, the impatient waters of the Colorado River wend through a cathedral of rock that echoes the story of time. A solitary eagle soars on the wind. Here, amidst the awesome beauty of the Grand Canyon, lies the essence of the Southwest—a sense of limitless space, a feeling of freedom.
"The Southwest is a state of mind," says author Charles McCarry, "as much as it is a geographical region." With photographer George Mobley, he set out to discover the special qualities that distinguish this sun-splashed corner of the United States. Together their efforts have produced this richly illustrated, vividly narrated chronicle of The Great Souchwesc.
Woven into the fabric of the story are the threads of many cultures, each of which has left a legacy of adventure and romance. Ancient Indians built impressive civilizations, then disappeared. Conquistadors expanded the dominion of the Spanish crown as they rode northward from Mexico in search of gold. Determined explorers and settlers struggled across arid, uncharted expanses. Soldiers clashed with native warriors. In their turn came legendary figures of the old West—trappers, prospectors, gamblers, gunfighters, lawmen, cowboys.
Today pioneers of a different kind explore the frontiers of science and technology. Meanwhile, like the cactus that grows from the dry earth and brings forth a brilliant flower, the Southwest is blossoming. Farmers reap bountiful crops watered by irrigation. New houses, factories, and office towers rise. Opportunity beckons, and each year tens of thousands of people move to this land of sunshine and mild winters. It is the fastest growing region in the country.
Come and meet the people of the Southwest: artists and astronomers, river guides and citrus growers, a Navajo medicine man and a former Texas Ranger with tales aplenty. Hospitality comes easy here, and you'll be greeted with a smile.
Full-color photographs and absorbing text convey the varied, vigorous activity and the spellbinding scenery of the great Southwest—a land steeped in history and brimming with promise for the future.
Golden poppies and violet lupines brighten a slope of the Ajo Mountains in Arizona's Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Beyond a skeletal jumping cholla, columnar saguaros climb toward an eroded volcanic butte.
