This book is the last work of Giuseppe De Logu, professor of the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts. This famous scholar spent his entire life studying the art of the City of Canals. A great number of his books and articles have been published on this inexhaustible theme. He passionately loved his city and passionately studied Venetian painting, the grandest testimonial to the life of the city. In this book he approaches the theme from a new direction. He dissects the relationship of art to society, the role of state commissions to artists, and how painters contributed to the glory and prestige of the Republic. He analyzes Venetian painting through three centuries and treats painters such as the Bellinis, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto,
