THE GARDENS AT FILOLI
Filoli is a 654-acre estate located in a beautiful oak-studded valley on the eastern side of the California Coast Range mountains, about thirty miles south of San Francisco. William Bowers Bourn II commissioned prominent San Francisco architect Willis Polk to build the brick mansion in 1915, and the Bourns took up residence there in 1917. Bourn extracted the name for his estate from a credo he much admired: "Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life."
Bourn's friend Bruce Porter, a designer, painter, poet and critic, took on the job of designing the gardens, and Bella Worn supervised the planting. Their initial designs and plant choices were maintained by the William P. Roths, the second owners of the estate. Today, as part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Filoli continues to showcase world-renowned gardens reminiscent of the finest European manors.

Manicured lawns, hedges and yew trees interwoven with brick pathways delineate the various gardens of Filoli, from the intricate Knot Gardens to the romantic and charming Wedding Place, from the Sunken Garden with reflecting pool to the Chartres Cathedral Window Garden, reminiscent of the windows of the French cathedral. The Dutch Garden, Rose Garden and Woodland Garden lend their own color and mood schemes to the splendid collection of flora that gathers around the focal point of Filoli, a sundial that reads "Time Began in a Garden."
For this book, garden photographer Christopher McMahon has chosen over one hundred of more than 1,000 color photographs he took of the gardens while he was assistant garden superintendent of the estate. Together with the historical and descriptive introductory text by horticuhurist Timmy Gallagher, McMahon's pictures present an informative and sensuous stroll through The Gardens at Filoli.
Filoli is a registered state landmark, and the house and gardens are open for tours. Vissza
