A Note to the Reader
The Free Press is known throughout the world as one of the leading publishers in the social sciences. It publishes works in anthropology, politi-cal science, économies, psychology, philosophy, industrial relations, international affairs and sociology. From time to time it also publishes out-standing works not in the social sciences. Its complete list now comprises more than one hundred books in the social sciences themselves which are fundamental to any basic library in this area.
Its list is international in scope, bringing the American reader the best work done in ail countries. The authors of The Free Press live on ail five continents. The distribution facilities of The Free Press make it possible to have its books in overseas bookstores on publication, helping to bring the international community of scholars closer together. Its complete list now comprises more than one hundred books in the social sciences themselves which are fundamental to any basic library in this area.

The distribution facilities of The Free Press make it possible to have its books in overseas bookstores on publication, helping to bring the international community of scholars closer together. The Publishing program of The Free Press is in four parts:
1.The publication of original works of theoretical, empirical or methodological interest.
2. The publication of a seríes of anthologies which collect the best work in special fields of knowledg^Already published are "readers" in urban sociology, public opinion and communication, social science methodology, and bureaucracy. In 1956 and 1957, The Free Press will publish readers in social theory, political analysis, population, the sociology of religion, and educa-tional psychology. In time these readers will number over 50.
3. Each year The Editors of The Free Press invite a group of scholars to take up an important piece of published research and evalúate this work in the light of Continuities in Social Research. Two such évaluations have already been published; otbers are scheduled for publication through the coming two years.
4. Translations from foreign languages and the reprinting of older works which are no longer available are an important part of The Free Press.
The Free Press is also the American publisher of Human Relations: An International Journal of the Social Sciences.
