THE FIREARMS DICTIONARY is organized and presented in familiar dictionary format, beginning with ABERRATION and ending with ZIMMERSTUETZEN. The definitions, however, go beyond simple, precise statements to explain the word or phrase fully and to put it into context with any related terms. When the defining of any entry involves using any other terms, those terms are cross-referenced. To insure full understanding, each entry also includes cross-reference to any other entries that the reader should be familiar with.
Definitions are presented in detail under the term that Is most technically correct, but commonly used alternative designations are identified. For instance, the red-painted proofhad has for some reason become known as a blue pill. There is an entry for blue piH which refers the user to the more accurate term, where full explanation is given.

Trade names are included insofar as the name of a company's product, because of its long and respected usage, is referred to universally when that particular product, regardless of manufacturer, is discussed. Luger is a good example of a trade name application to all pistols of similar design and included in The Firearms Dictionary.
Supplementing the precise definitions are two hundred specially developed photographs, drawings, and charts. These clarify technical detail for the layman. And, the important mathematical formulas involved in ballistics and shooting are presented in the simplest possible ways.

editor of Shooting Times magazine, really \ began his research for The Firearms Dictionary while working on an earlier book, MODERN ABC'S OF GUNS (Stackpole Books, S4.95). "That was when I realized that many gun terms were used differently by various writers, some even had conflicting definitions tacked on to them, and errors and misconceptions had been perpetuated over the years in gun literature." To fill an obvious need for one consistent authority on the language of guns. Bob began to research, compile, and Illustrate this classic reference.
Thoroughly at home in this special language, Steindler has written three books on guns, and Is a contributing editor to many foreign publications. His by-line has appeared regularly in True, Outdoor Life, Gun Digest, all the major gun publications. He has also written extensively on fishing, camping, and hunting dogs as well as on guns.
Not just a "writer-about," Steindler has hunted all over the United States, Canada, and Europe and has explored the wilds of Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
