"The American farmhouse brings to memory

Is there anyone who hasn't yearned to live
in a sturdy old farmhouse, where simplic-
ity and nature envelop us in a calm and
restorative atmosphere? Doors that open onto
green pastures and dense woodlands, well-worn
floors and low, embracing ceilings; the invitation
of an open hearth and the pleasures of a well-
stocked garden have a seductive way of luring us
away from city life, sometimes never to return.
Captured here is an unforgettable collec-
tion of quintessential American farmhouses
from across the country From traditional New
England colonial and Quaker stone houses to
rustic log cabins in the West, from gracious
southern plantations to Napa Valley wineries,
THE FARMHOUSE celebrates a special way
of living.
More than 250 full-color photographs and a
lively text reveal the unique beauty of both the
exterior and interior of each farmhouse. The many
architectural styles and individual approaches
to restoration, renovation and interior design
that are depicted here mirror the history, tradi-
tion and spirit that lies deep within the heart of
these American farms.
The images are timeless. Apple orchards
ripe for the harvest. Rambling post-and-rail

fences framing lush pastures and misty ponds.
Vast, sun drenched vineyards and simple, fra-
grant herb gardens. Low-ceilinged kitchens
warmed by huge fireplaces ablaze with winter's
first fire. Formal Victorian parlors, cozy, wood-
paneled libraries, and sunny bedrooms complete
with four-poster beds and handwoven quilts.
THE FARMHOUSE will prove irresistible
to anyone with an interest in and a love for en-
during home design, whether it is a love for the
innovative architectural quality of exposed shin-
gle walls or roof beams, or a recently restored
barn or smokehouse; whether it is for colorful
collections of mocha ware and delft, antique
baskets and toys, or unusual contemporary art.
