"There were a great many Ruggles children —boys and girls, and a baby that was really a boy but didn't count either way yet." They lived with their mother and father in the last house on a dead-end street in Otwell-on-the-Ouse in England.
Mrs. Ruggles took in washing. Mr. Ruggles was a "dustman", or trash collector. The children did almost everything—certainly everything their busy minds could think of, and that was plenty! Kate was the smart one and was awarded a scholarship, but her joy in this achievement was almost ruined when she lost her brand-new school hat at the beach.
