Ecoiogists teli us to limit technological growth to save the Earth's air, water, and land. Economists teli us to produce more goods and services and to rely on technology to prevent revolution around the world. Newspaper headlines foretell doom unless something is done now. In this essential reader, Róbert Theobald forces us to do something by challenging our most basic assumptions and values about success. We all want to be successful. In the past our standards of success matched those of industry: work hard, pfoduce more and more things. * But now the standards of industry seem to be destroying the very Earth we live on, Perhaps these are not the best values anymore. Perhaps , the Earth and humans will die if we cannot manage to select new forms of success, , Through news articles, fictionfr speeches, poems, cartoons, and advertisements, the questions of success and survival are examined thoroughly. First the book introduces the broad outlines of the debate between ecoiogists and economists. Next, it treats the argument of the economists more critically and in greater depth. Any concern to limit the growth of technology must take into account the poor people of the world who do not yet share in Western affluence. But to get their share of that affluence, must they follow the same course of industrialization that we have, or can they bypass it entirely? This is the subject of Part Two. Part Three contains selections that point the way toward a new ethic, to help the reader* look for new priorities and new systems to replace the industrial system. This section deals with our thinking about systems in generál. Part Four concerns how we can begin to change our personal lives and individual values. The final section contains stepping-stones, short statements intended to help each one of us make that first step toward his or her unique success. Róbert Theobald is a consultant, speaker, and author. Among his many books on economics and alternative futures are The Challenge of Abundance, Free Men and Free Markets, The Guaranteed Income, An Alternative Future for America II, Teg's 1994, Futures Conditionai and Habit and Habitat He lives with his wife and two Siamese cats in Arizona. Stephanie Mills is a graduate of Mills College in Calífornia. As valedictorian of the Class of 1969 she startled her listeners by announcing that she did not plan to bring any children into this crowded world. In line with her beliet she has been a field representative for Planned Parenthood. Vissza
