"He has as many talents as a cat has lives", wrote Frank O'Connor of John Brophy's short stories, and an outline of Mr. Brophy's writing career substantiates the statement. He is known primarily as a novelist and four of his best sellers have been made into films, each retaining its own title: Waterfront with Richárd Burton, Immortal Sergeant with Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara, Turn the Key Softly with Joan Collins, and The Day They Robbed the Bank of England with Peter O'Toole. A boy soldier in World War I (he enlisted at the age of 14), John Brophy afterwards became an acknowledged authority on the slang and the satire and the songs of that period. After World War II - during which he edited a literary magaziné and wrote training manuals for the Home Guard - he earned a new reputation as a thoughtful and entertaining commentator, on a subject of universal interest, with three successive books, The Humán Face, The Humán Face Reconsidered and The Face in Western Art. It is perhaps not surprising that his writings have been translated into sixteen languages. Now, with his originality of approach, his gift for discovering rare and illuminating information, and his widely admired command of English prose, Mr Brophy examines the ever-changing relationship between the nude and the portrayal of faces in the long history of painting, drawing and sculpture. No less than 102 large colour plates, arranged in pairs so that the face is shown as nearly as possible the same size as in the originál work of art, illustrate The Face of the Nude: for each pair Mr Brophy has written an informative and thoughtprovoking commentary. His own collection of Old Master drawings is well known to students and art historians: somé are included among the black and white reproductions which embellish the main text. Vissza
