Humphry Clinker
The Expedition of Humphry Clinker, ostensibly a tour of England and Scotland in 1760, offering a striking panorama of the period, is nevertheless a novel-cum-picaresque románcé. The incidents of the journey are of the liveliest order, with Matthew Bramble (Smollett himself transformed into a Welsh squire); Tabitha (hus-band-hunting sister of the squire), cmean, avaricious, domineering?; Clinker, who converts Tabitha to Methodism, being picked up on the journey; Jerry Melford, undergraduate, Bramble's nephew; his sister, Lydia, a girl in her teens; Winifred Jenkins, lady's maid —who eventually marries Clinker.
Smollett recounts this hilarious journey in the form of letters, but a modern reader should not be put off by this, for Smollett uses the favoured epistolary mode in a very different way from Richardson, and often shows 6 character' from five different points of view—in fact Bramble, Tabitha, Jenkins, Melford, Lydia, seen in the eyes of each...
