of the major political, social and
economic challenges facing policy
makers and their advisers focus on issues
of public health.
Europe faces particular challenges. It's
population will be the oldest in the world for
the next 30 years. Not only are there new
diseases to be met, but the region is facing
the re-emergence of disease threats, many
of which it was believed had been defeated
in the last decades. Pressures on budgets
