The acute inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) can be produced by different chemicals (such as alcohol, drugs) and different viruses (such as hepatitis A, B, C, D and E virus). Hepatitis C virus (HCV), discovered in 1989, is dominantly transmitted by blood transfusion or i.v. drug use. The etiological role of HCV in chronic liver disease has gradually increased in Hungary and in the World. It is estimated that about 170 millión people are infected with HCV, which can cause acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis or even hepatocellular carcinoma. Both viral and host factors, dominantly immunological mechanisms play a key role in the development of different forms of HC V-induced liver diseases. Since HCV is a hepatotropic and lymphotropic agent, it can be involved not only in liver diseases, but alsó in malignant disorders of the lymphoid tissues.
