The Explosion
In February 1976 England obtained her long-awaited first Grandmaster Tony Miles. Since then the combination of careful training, weekend tournaments and sponsorship has brought England to the brink of challenging the Soviet Union for the chess supremacy of the world. The record of success over the last five years has been both consistent and remarkable. Four more players-Ray Keene, Michael Stean, John Nunn and Jon Speelman - have become Grandmasters and by November 1980 the year's tally of first prizes in international tournaments was 19! The team successes show England's strength in depth - particularly among the juniors: Nigel Short became, at 141, the youngest International Master in the history of chess. The Authors
This blow-by-blow account of England's rise to chess dominance is brought to life by a unique combination of talents:
International Master Murray Chandler is a New Zealand journalist who has been in England since 1977 (thanks to his winnings on the English Swiss Circuit) but writes with the outsider's eye. His own international achievements include first in the New York Grandmasters Tournament and the Lloyds Bank Masters.
Grandmaster Raymond Keene is very much the insider who has been a force in English chess for over ten years. Columnist for the Spectator, and leading Batsford author, he was first at Dortmund and Barcelona in 1980 and a member of the Olympiad team.
Invaluable material has been contributed by Leonard Barden of The Guardian and The Financial Times, who has been involved in junior training and sponsorship for over a decade, and who was the first to predict the English chess explosion.
