GROWING UP IN SIBERIA BY ESTHER HAUTZIG The time was June 1941, and the place was Vilna, a city in the northeastern corner of Poland. Europe was at war, but as far as Esther Rudomin was concerned, wars and bombs stopped at the gates of her house, happened on the far side of the garden walls. (Continued from front üap) for criminals and political enemies, the Rudomins became slave laborers in a gypsum mine. They were terrible years, when the family struggled continually for beds, food, clothing, fuel - everyday things one takes for granted. Yet it was a wonderful time, too. For despite the bittér hardships, the Rudomins made a new life with new friends. And they never lost their deep affection and trust in one another. Fiiled with great joy and sadness, humor and love, Esther Rudomin Hautzig's account of her childhood in Siberia is a magnificent story of the triumph of the humán spirit. Vissza
